Well It has been quite a while since my last post. I have high hopes for this blog despite my busy schedule with my wedding on the horizon. After getting hooked on Anji Bee Chill-cast and Daves Lounge Podcasts I've decided to start my own. I'm going to expand the blogs' scope of vision and include other community sites as well. For now I will be scanning Traxinspace.com, Buzzmusic.de, CTG music and maybe even some of the best from Modarchive. I don't intend on making this big but if it does well then great! If you would like to help me with my search send me your best tracks to my personal email at belcher.jason@gmail.com.

Please send your best productions. Although I'm not picky about quality I will screen out those tracks that are of poor production quality (bad eq, balance, volume, etc) as well as those that make me yawn in utter boredom or wince in pain.

The most are like teachers to me, though they may not know it ... like hamster, nool, monton, joachip, shytan, mute, magmavander, lad, th0ke, xiond, whitenoise oh gee i can probley think of 50 more ppl its a long list , a few are godlike to me ... tho i wont mention who they are ...tho hamster kinda looks like jesus christ, -since am on the subject of hamster he just made a remix of one of my songs

Talk about some the general techniques you use?
there are few techniques i use in the real world that are great time savers -
templates
...over the years i made some templates like drum paterns or synth sounds templates ... i use them over and over --- drum paterns are mostly the same ....just some tweaking here and there
presets
gota love presets ...i dont sit there makeing presets all day ... just when am working on a song ....i might use Zephod Blue Filter and make a nice phase with it ... then i will save the preset for some other song....
premade bmx
i have a few premade bmx that has basic styles ... i been useing the same few bmx for years.

What are some of your favorite machines?
i like to put phase and flange on everything.
so i really like Zephod Blue Filter, Rymix FlaserBox
other machines i like fsm infector, jeskola cross delay, jeskola ninja delay, cyanphase v dist , anything made by joachims I almost always have all these machines in every song.

I've done my best to create a Trance mix that moves the Heart and spirit. In my opinion a good mix is defined by its ability to make your forget that it's really many songs run together. Instead it becomes like a long Symphonic Movement.

Gerry Cueto Spotlight

I caught up with Gerry recently and asked him some questions about the Business of selling Dance music and how he broke through from Amateur to Professional.

One question I asked was how he goes about writing a track from scratch. Quartz responded; "In general, most of my music (post-buzzmusic.de + Arguru Forever) is produced in the same file I've been using for 2 years now.. so it just keeps getting updated with the new music. I think it's the best way to perfect one's sound, than to keep starting from scratch.. It's like updating the same track for years and years and evolving it, instead of taking a risk with a new song from scratch every time you make a song. I can usually get more DJs to play more future songs that way because they know me by my sound, whereas b4 it was more of a hit or miss."

I always thought I was being lazy by re-using templates over and over. I stand gleefully corrected. Without any more delay I present Gerry Cuetos' BMR Interview.

How did you get into buzz?

Through Hamst3r. I was making tracks before with an old Roland hardware synth and Yamaha XG and I heard this dude Hamster Alliance could make all these crazy sounds from just a computer software called Buzz. and it was free?! No way. I thought this was a huge joke Hamster had on the net for 2 years. Finally in 2002 I caved and read the buzzmanual and started making my own music in buzz. It was mostly the original sounds from the synths with no tweaking whatsoever. but hey even that sounded better than what I was using before.

How did you make the transition from amateur to Professional?

when people started telling me that Paul van Dyk was downloading some of my buzzmusic.de tracks and playing them in his sets. I thought this was a joke too but I finally got my hands on a recording and heard it for myself a few years ago. I started getting calls from labels.

Was it a gradual thing or was it a case of instant fame?

I'd say more of an instant thing with the internet release of my Deestylistic - By My Side remix. I still keep getting messages from people wanting it on my myspace, and the Solange - Messages one too. However, I prefer to concentrate my myspace on more current projects. I may come back and rework those old remixes

Who are your most inspiring influences from the past and present?

Lange, Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren, Planet Perfecto, John O'Callaghan, Sean Tyas

What advice would you give a talented producer in this highly competitive market of music making?

Keep posting your music on sites like buzzmusic.de You'd really be surprised who lurks that website and other sites like that too. I have a lot of friends who are great musicians and don't wanna share their music, then complain why nobody cares about it... lol well.. uhm.. duh... no one has heard it yet!

Do you have to be a DJ first and a composer second to be noticed in the Dance Music world?

I don't think so.. You just gotta have stuff that's catchy.

In my many years spent going to Parties and Clubs I've never seen a more desperate person than the guys outside trying to sell there DJ mixes from the trunks of there cars. What made YOUR PR effective? Did you let your music speak for itself or was it something else that got you noticed besides just writing loads of Incredibly mind blowing music?

Think viral marketing. Nobody likes to be sold a product, but if people can sell themselves on something, you have a high advantage. What's something that people are gonna copy paste the link and give to their friends? Since I had no host at the time, buzzmusic.de was a great place to put my music and it had a blog-style comments section. So if people liked it, they could comment, and newcomers would know what they're getting into before they download. With a few of my tracks on buzzmusic.de, I noticed that the links would get posted in all sorts of places (blogs, forums, sites, ect). I would just google and see where it would end up.

And this was years ago.. and now YouTube has come out which is relatively new still.. so the next viral goal is to get a song out there so catchy that I get put in all those cheesey anime videos or something lol.

I don't consider myself to be a viral guru (i'm pretty crappy with it actually), but I have some friends who are.. Collaborating with them put me at a good advantage (like Deestylistic for example).. so expect more tracks with some more popular current or former internet viral guys.

By going viral, doesn't mean I'm going to sell out either... Yeah a song that sounds like mary had a little lamb is probably going to get more clicks than a full 8 minute trance track, but hey I've found the balance before, so it can be done again!

What are your plans for the Future and will you continue to release tracks on buzzmusic.de?

I have a new track playing around by a lot of trance DJs called "Take My Hand" by my pseudonym Joey Shine. Just saw it on some new playlists by Jon O'Bir and Aly & Fila... Be sure to download some of their sets and hear it. (www.jonobir.com) (www.crystalclouds.com) It's still unsigned and it's not out yet, but I'm really happy that people are enjoying it. I can't say that I have any plans for near future buzzmusic.de releases, since it's hard to get Djs to play tracks that are widely available to download for anyone, unless they're really catchy or something, but I'll upload tracks on buzzmusic.de for any special occasion that may come up.

I would like to start this post with an appropriate scripture from The Bible.

I will not pretend to have known Arguru. I did however get to know him through his many machines written for Buzz. He went on to develop Noiztracker, Psycle, FL Studio & his last project, Aodix.

In light of this I think it would be a good idea to Hold a special Buzz Memorial in honor of Arguru. Dig out all those old Arguru Machines and remember him the way he would want us to; Through the music that he loved! No rules just write some beautiful music with his programming.

Music Theory is Good for you.

The problem with many of the Music Theory sites I run across is the emphasis placed on Sight reading notes. Bah! Who needs to site read sheet music when you have a Tracker Pattern Editor. I guess thats needed when teaching yourself Classical Piano but it's almost useless to people like me. The Tonal Centre is an excellent resource for the Music Tracker/buzz mind. I use a reproduction of Shoenberg's chart to guide me along when I do more adventurous changes in my compositions such as; Quantum Contemplation or Thunderstorm. It's amazing how beautifully you can break the rules when you know the rules.

"Virtual jams from across the internet"

I found this site randomly while trying to find something else. I was impressed with the concept of Jamlab.us They encourage Live or Virtual Jamming. Your free to Download any of the Sessions and add to them. They seem to prefer intermediate to advanced musicians so I wouldn't expect much of a response unless you have some chops. I've listened to some of the Jams and I'm surprised at how varied and colorful they are. I've heard Influences all the way from Tangerine Dream to the "Grateful Dead". Here is a except from the site:

What is a cyberjam, virtualjam, or virtual track?

"Anyone can download our music and record new parts. You can plan or improvise your new parts. You can add as many new parts as you like. Some folks add new guitar and keyboard parts. We hope you will share your contribution with us. If we like the new version, we will post it on our site."

The Site design is Simplistic but that is ok because they seem to really be about Making music with no strings attached .

According to the site all material can be used on a nonprofit basis so all you Sample Junkies can slice and dice away with your favorite sampler.

Hamst3r to host BMR Compo results

Hamst3r has agreed to host the results of the BMR Compo winners on his site using the xspf web player format. I believe this will be much more exciting than just a compiled zip. Hopefully this will be the beginning of a symbiosis between BMR and THA. Stay tuned for the next fun BMR Competition which will be based on a single Genre of Music with no restrictions on Generators.

Are you constantly switching between the 3 edit screens in buzz? Of course you are because that's the only way to get anything done in that old dino of a program! I recently made the plunge into the world of buze about a month ago. I haven't looked back since and can't believe I've ever been able to get by without it. Yeah its a little unstable and buggy thats why we all need to get off our butts and donate a little money to the cause. It's funny how hard and fast a programmer will work with a little green in his pocket. A good ethical rule to follow when you rely heavily on a particular piece of Open Source Freeware software is to donate a little money everytime the developer comes out with a new version. It doesn't have to be much and I'm sure you can afford to give 2 or 3 dollars. If everyone subscribed to that thinking we might give calvin enough incentive to make regular backups of the source and continue to improve it all the way to completion.

I'm curious to know how many people plan on entering this Compo so I would like anybody who is currently working on a track to comment on this post.

Also I would like to clarify that the compo will be ending on June 21. Please do not vote on any entries tell after that date.

qUebb brought up a nice idea earlier today and I've decided to adopt it. After everyone is finished I will collect all of your presets for Green Milk and compile them into a zip for all to DL on Buzzmusic.de I've made a Truck load worth of presets for Green Milk myself and I'm sure all of you will too. For the winners of the Compo it would be nice to present them with a xspf web player kinda like what Hamst3r does with his Submersible Collections. I haven't been able to get it working so far cause I'm techno crippled so if any of you have a suggestion or wanna help set that up please contact yours truly.

I guess I need to be more clear about the rules here.
They are as follows:
Only Generators allowed are Green Milk, Madbrain's Fm synth and his Dynamite Synth in any combo you like.
No samples and no trackers with one exception ( you can mixdown sounds you create with the given Generators(Green Milk, FM synth, Dynamite Only) for this compo using the wavetable and Cng recorder) If you utilize this method you should be including your before mixdown bmx as well as after in a zip.
You can use any Effects available as long as they do not produce sound they are valid.

Last, This is about learning some Kung Fu skillz with the 3 Generators so don't lose the point.

Rymix's Mod Roots Spotlighted

David Gray

All Musicians find that one artist that just blows them away and becomes the one you strive to emulate. David is that one. I truly believe David Gray is my generations Bob Dylan. I'd venture to say that most of us are bedroom musicians. David Gray Started out in a similar way with a guitar some mics and a computer. One interesting factoid; David Gray's Brother-in-law is non other than Phil Hartnoll of Orbital. They collaborated on a track called "Illuminate" in 1999 for the album "Middle of Nowhere". It was surprising to hear the connection between the two. As Musicians we all feed one another with inspiration and creativity or at least that's the idea. Listed are some of my favorite youtube videos for some fun and just maybe he will inspire your music too.

BMR Interview of the Month

In this world you can usually have one of two things, Quantity or Quality. Magmavander is known for both. Magma has been releasing at buzzmusic.de since around 2004 as far as I can see and along the way has improved by leaps and bounds. One thing is for sure, Magma knows how to create a mood and a vibe rarely matched on the charts. Although Magma isn't a guitarist his music is great to play one to. I've done a couple jams with him myself and have improved my playing as a result. Between Nephtali & Magmavander I have a bountiful collection of backing tracks to Jam to. With no further delay I present the results of his Interview.

How did you find buzz?

I was working for some french paper computer magazine, writing articles and mainly making the free cd provided with the magazine.
Every month I had to choose about 100 freewares, sharewares or commercial demos and make a snaphshot and a short comment for each of it. I found Buzz on Internet but I dont remember where exactly. Maybe something like Download.com or freeware.com.

Before using Buzz, I didnt make music. I liked a lot music, I'm a real music lover, but was more involved in Graphics.
I have had an accoustic guitar, but didnt learn music or to play music with it. I just knew two or three songs learned from some friends. I used my guitar mainly to be cool with girls, if you see what I mean ;)
Anyway, I lost my guitar after a few monthes.

For my job I first found a commercial software, Acid, and I tried it and made two songs in one afternoon.
I was proud of what I've done with Acid, I have kept the mp3 of these songs. This was my first contact with music making.
But quickly I understood that making music with loops is very easy but very frustrating because you didnt really "write" the music. That said, I dont mean that making music with samples is bad. By example I'm a fan of Daft Punk for their creativity in sampled music use.

And then I found Buzz. I installed it, made the tutorial bmx, the one with :
"You pressed the Play icon and didn't hear my Tutorial Song?
No wonder! Because you'll write this song!"
writed in the "blah-blah" part of Buzz. I immediately understand the incredible power of Buzz and the infinite possibilities it offers. After ten minutes of use I become a Buzz addict.

Buzz changed my life, really. It offers me a fantastic way of expression and makes me discover the Buzz community.
A great community.

Any major Influences buzz musicians and or Pro artists.

The Buzz musician that influenced me the most is th0ke. He helped me a lot understand Buzz and music.
He is a major influence to me. I dont know what would happen without th0ke.
I guess I am not the only one in this case :)
Also I cant forget people like Shytan, monoton, Tinga and schoeder.
People like Hamster also makes me understand that Buzz can produce high quality level music.
Anyway, every buzzers inspired me, in a way or in another...
So, sorry for those I forget here.

I have many many influences in music.
Of course, first of all, jazz musicians influenced me a lot.
I like jazz when it try to explore some new ways in music, less when it's a "traditionalised" jazz..
Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, St Germain, Gato Barbieri, Weather Report, Magma (?), Mc Coy Tyner, the acid jazz and electro jazz scene are an inspiration source. And people like Courtney Pine. But there is a lot of other jazz artist I like. Brasilian music is an influence too.

In classical Claude Debussy, Erik Satie, Maurice Ravel, all these "impressionist" musicians influenced me a lot. And also Gustav Mahler. Same for Soundtrack music.

All the electronic music scene influenced me. Drum&Bass, Trip Hop, dark techno and also House music. Same for black music. And rock/pop too. I dont have enough place here to write all the name of artists that influenced me.

In fact, to tell the truth, I like any genre of music if it's good.

Where do you find inspiration?

Good question. Difficult to answer. One of my latest song, "Rendez-vous", was inspired by my job. Every morning I'm on a beach, in south France, and it's a beautiful place. Every morning I see paradise. That influenced me for this song. A song like "Cherry Tree Flower" was inspired by the incoming of the spring and by the trees with flowers. Song like "Never Come Back" was written in a dark time in my life. I guess that my mood is my major source of inspiration. But I have no rules about inspiration... You cant have "inspiration on demand". It cames, it goes...

But Buzz is an eternal source of inspiration :o)
